Transition points are stressful: You know you need to make a change but may be unsure of which available options make the most sense for your next move. Understanding your unique strengths and resources is an important first step in making choices that will lead you to rewarding work or opportunities for personal growth. MIT SMR columnist Sanyin Siang believes that by assessing and analyzing five types of capital that we all possess, we can more realistically understand how to make the most of opportunities when they arise. Doing so carefully and with kindness toward ourselves can improve both our chances of succeeding in new roles and our overall well-being.

  • Nintendo Just Quietly Released a Wild Collab With One of the Most Beloved Arcade Games

The joy of Vampire Survivors is in its high-speed unpredictability. The roguelike shoot 'em up is defined by random power-ups and sudden influxes of snarling villains, and a sense of capriciousness that is as thrilling as it is unserious. Now, with the Operation Guns DLC out on Switch May 9, this wild ride gets even more chaotic — and is all the more fun for it.

First of all, Operation Guns also applies to the Steam, Xbox, and mobile versions of Vampire Survivors, and once its PlayStation version eventually releases, it'll be there, too. But the game's Switch port, I think, is particularly attuned to its 8-bit monsters and endless replayability.

  • "Only Once Every 221 Years:" How Scientists Predict This Rare Clash of Cicada Broods Will Go Down

The last time these two groups emerged together was in 1803 when Thomas Jefferson was president.

In the wake of North America’s recent solar eclipse, another historic natural event is on the horizon. From late April through June 2024, the largest brood of 13-year cicadas, known as Brood XIX, will co-emerge with a midwestern brood of 17-year cicadas, Brood XIII.

  • The New Lord of the Rings Movie Is Doubling Down on an Overrated Character

Of all the ideas to come out of Middle-earth, Andy Serkis’ Gollum is by far the most fascinating. The character has become the sneering face of Peter Jackson’s Lord of the Rings films, and for good reason. Serkis’ work as a motion-capture performer carried the medium into a new frontier, and the filmmaker brought pathos to a character who could have easily been an annoying mascot.

For all his inherent meme potential, Gollum is a compelling, complicated figure. He has the potential to inspire as much sympathy as he does ire, which is why fascination for him has endured decades after his last film appearance.

  • Anbernic's RG Cube Has a Screen Like No Other Gaming Handheld

To no one’s surprise, Anbernic is already working on another handheld after having just revealed its RG35XX SP in a clamshell form factor. Staying on the theme of unique form factors, Anbernic looks to be working on what could be called the RG Cube if a video leaked by Nittrx is any indication.

It may not be officially announced, but the RG Cube represents a unique design since there aren’t any retro handhelds out there with a perfectly square display and touchscreen capabilities. We’ve already seen square displays with PowKiddy’s latest RGB20SX and its RGB30 and there are plenty of higher-end handhelds with touchscreens, but never one that combines both.

  • This Personality Trait May Explain Why You Are Still Single

Are all single people insecure? When we think about people who have been single for a long time, we may assume it’s because single people have insecurities that make it difficult for them to find a partner or maintain a relationship.

Our latest research published in the Journal of Personality suggests they can. However, perhaps unsurprisingly, not everybody tends to thrive in singlehood. Our study shows a crucial factor may be a person’s attachment style.

  • Nintendo Boss' Comments Reveal the Biggest Threat to Gaming's Future

It’s no secret that video game development is getting harder and taking longer with each generation, and there’s no sign of that trend abating. That fact is so obvious that Nintendo president Shuntaro Furukawa even called increasing development times “inevitable” in a recent interview. But what some call an inevitability is just as much a choice, and one that’s a danger to the entire industry.

Furukawa’s comments come from an interview in Famitsu, translated by GamesRadar. He points to studio acquisitions as one solution for the “inevitable” lengthening development timelines, as large publishers could incorporate smaller, already established development teams to work on their games.

  • The Most Action-Packed Sci-Fi Movie of 2024 is About to Hit Blu-Ray

It’s been a little over a month since Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire hit theaters and became one of the year’s biggest films. Though its stellar box office run is coming to a close, the rivals will be arriving on home video soon.

The New Empire is set for digital release on May 14, so fans will be able to buy or rent the film (and enjoy a few special features) right after Mother’s Day. There’s no word yet on when the film will be available to stream on Max, but given the release window most Warner Bros. films have adhered to, we could expect to see The New Empire streaming this summer.

  • This Tiny Electric Motorcycle Packs a Wild Range

Good things sometimes come in “smol” packages and that’s true for electric motorcycles, too.

J2R Dynamics, a French startup making e-motos, is getting ready to reveal its first product, the Smol. As the name implies, it’s a small form factor that tucks a chunky battery into its minimalist frame. While it’s not meant for grand touring like some 450-mile range e-motorcycles, the Smol is ideal for commuting around a city.
