Devendra Jhajharia breaks own world record, wins gold at Rio Paralympics 2016, watch video

Devendra Jhajharia on Wednesday created history by becoming the first Indian to win two gold medals at the Paralympics. Jhajharia had also won Gold for India in 2004 at Athens, before today’s win at the Rio Paralympics. At the Olympic Stadium in Rio, Jhajharia set a new record in Javelin throw with 63.97 metres, bettering his own world record throw at Athens of 62.15 metres.

Hailing from Rajasthan, 36-year-old Jhajharia is currently ranked third in the world. Jhajharia has an amputated left hand, and was presented with the Arjuna award in the year 2004 and the Padma Shri in 2012. He became the first Paralympian to receive the honour.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi congratulated Jhajharia this morning in a tweet. “Congratulations to Devendra Jhajharia for the historic and well-deserved Gold at the #Paralympics. We are very proud of him,” the Prime Minister tweeted.

At the Rio Paralympics 2016, India now has two golds, one silver and a bronze. Devendra competed in the event alongside fellow Indians Rinku Hooda and Sundar Singh Gurjar.
