On the Record: Killer Instincts

It started with the Miss India pageant, and modelling seemed to be the next logical step. Though I respect the discipline and hard work that goes into modelling, I just did not fit in that industry. Acting was my destiny, it is just that it took me sometime to figure that out.

Can you tell us about your role in the film?

I play Simi, the female protagonist. She is Raghavan’s love interest. She is strong and independent but at the same time very endearing and vulnerable. Raghavan and she share a very hot and cold relationship. The audience at times will wonder ‘what are they doing with each other?’ But it is a very strong relationship.

How did you prepare for the role?

When I auditioned for the film, I had no idea who will be the director or my co-star. We started shooting within six days after the audition. Anurag is not a very rigid director. He lets you interpret the character in your own way. In those six days, I read about Raghavan and tried to understand my character. Also, I just had the script of my character. I got the entire script only when the shooting was over.

How was it to work with Nawazuddin Siddiqui and Vicky Kaushal?

When I auditioned for the film, I had not seen Masaan. I am glad about that, or else I would not have been so comfortable with Vicky. Both Vicky and Nawaz are great actors and so critically acclaimed. Yet, they are very simple and dedicated.

What is your take on the Udta Punjab controversy?

Being new in the industry, I dare not have an opinion on many topics. But a huge amount of effort, time and money is spent on making a film. It is disheartening to see creative freedom being curbed. I hope the situation changes as it is a great time for cinema, especially parallel cinema in terms of acceptance by the audience.

Were you nervous about making the shift from modelling to acting?

Acting it is an intimate affair. I am not in a position where I can sit back and decide my career. But if you are passionate about it then you can make it. It is a matter of luck and timing and I am fortunate that I have got this break. I may not be prepared, but I am not afraid.
