India becoming world leader: Telecom minister
Jamshedpur: Union minister for communication and Information Technology, Ravi Shankar Prasad, attended a Vikas Parv event at Michael John auditorium on Friday and said India is set to become a world leader. "The country has achieved an annual growth of 7.6% amid global slowdown under Prime Minister Narendra Modi's leadership," said Prasad.
Detailing at length the electronic path that the Centre has adopted to empower the masses through a series of welfare programmes, Prasad transparency and trust are the hallmarks of the Modi government.

"The BJP does not condone corruption," said Prasad, while addressing the event to celebrate the completion of two years of Modi rule at the Centre.
Announcing that the country is presently witnessing a 67% growth in e-commerce, Prasad said the Centre is working pro-actively to ensure the country's 1.25 billion population is electronically connected. "By 2017, India will have 650 postal payment banks and 1.30 lakh mobile ATMs," said Prasad.
Taking a dig at the Manmohan Singh-led UPA government, Prasad said the telecom ministry earned a "bad reputation" after the 2G scam during A Raja's tenure as telecom minister. "The telecom ministry has made a strong comeback by earning Rs 10,000 crore through auctioning of spectrum to mobile service providers," he said.
He also added that BSNL has registered nearly 2,000 crore in operating profit in the past two years.
He said BSNL's landline revenue is increasing by 4% and, presently, 23 lakh customers are connecting with the government-owned communication firm per day, which is much higher than the eight lakh customers per day recorded during the UPA government's tenure.
