Jorhat: The Assam government has planned employment generation through innovative agriculture schemes, said agriculture minister Atul Bora here on Monday.
Addressing the media on the sidelines of a departmental review meeting held at Jorhat circuit house here, the minister said, "There are thousands of jobless youths in the state and we are thinking about employing them and utilizing the workforce through various agriculture schemes.
Unemployment in Assam is now a serious problem and our chief minister has also expressed his serious concerns about it. We have given priority on the issue and steps will be taken soon. We have already made our commitment to the people of the state regarding the issue and we will try our best to keep it."
Bora said sectors like horticulture, veterinary and food processing have lot of opportunities to generate employment.
He said the government was committed to starting skill development schemes in these sectors in order to address the unemployment problem.
"We will also introduce a strong monitoring system on the government schemes so that the poor and the needy are benefited. We are also ready to punish the corrupt government officials involved in irregularities in government schemes," Bora said.
The minister participated in a review meeting of his department as a part of the government's 100 days' action plan. All top government officials in the district were present in the meeting.
The minister asked the government officials to do their duties properly.
