On Monday (June 13), while saying that the prerogative for deciding the setting, theme and storyline of a film rests entirely with the filmmaker, the Bombay High Court shot down all but one of the changes imposed by the CBFC on the makers of Udta Punjab. The only deletion that the filmmakers will be required to make is a scene that depicts the character Tommy Singh, played by Shahid Kapoor, urinating in front of a concert audience. The filmmakers will also be required to put out a disclaimer that they don’t intend to portray any state in a bad light and that they do not promote the use of cusswords.

The remaining 12 “reasons for cuts” listed in a CBFC letter issued to the filmmakers are below:

*A signboard saying “Punjab” to be deleted.
*All references to Punjab, Jalandhar, Chandigarh, Amritsar, Tarantaran, Jashanpura, Ambesar, Ludhiana and Moga to be deleted, even if they appear in dialogue or in the background.
*Removal of all instances of the words Chitta ve and Harami from the song no. 1.

*Delete all closeup shots of drugs being injected.
*Delete the line, jamin banzar te aulad kanjar.
*Delete the name of the dog “Jacky Chain”
*The opening disclaimer of the film should be in audio/video and should proclaim: The film focuses on the rising menace of drugs and the war against drugs and is an attempt to show the ill-effects of drugs on today’s youth and the social fabric. We acknowledge the battle against drugs being fought by the government and police. But this battle cannot be won unless the people of India unite against the menace.
*A second disclaimer, proclaiming the film to be a work of fiction, to be increased according to the audio/visual.
