INDORE: A few upcoming residential townships in the city are planning to install organic waste converters in the campus to reuse hundreds of kilograms of bio degradable waste generated every day in each household.

The initiative according to waste management experts will reduce garbage from the townships and a timely processing of the biodegradable waste will lead to generation of organic manure that can be used for gardening and plantation.

According to experts the housing societies generates an average of 400-500 kg of waste per day out of which 60 per cent is organic waste from food items while the rest is inorganic. However due to lack of proper treatment and long transportation timings most of the waste tends to pose a environmental threat.

Kapil Verma, deputy general manager, projects, of a residential township coming up at the Talawali Chanada area said, "We have kept the provision of setting up an organic waste converter in the campus to treat the organic waste into manure and utilize it in our gardens."

The township plans to set up a converter of about 800 kg which will generate about 250 kg of manure per day. A few townships of the city have agreed to set up the waste converter in collaboration with the Indore Municipal Corporation.

However, a few real estate developers are not in favour of setting up of waste converters inside the campus citing health issues, foul odour, need of extra manpower and objection from the residents.

Builders said that the collection and processing of garbage is the responsibility of the corporation and not developers. Also the processing plants will add an additional liability to builders of selling manure generated in the process.
