KOLKATA: Prodded by chief minister Mamata Banerjee, the Housing Infrastructure Development Corporation (Hidco) has started preparing a plan to develop New Town as a Green City.

Hidco has already requested the state forest department to do a massive plantation this monsoon, as massive plantation programme has already been chalked up in New Town in which about 40,000 seedlings are expected to be planted at various places of the township. The programme may start from July 15 while preparation and earthwork will start very soon. The programme will take place preferably by converging other national programmes like the Namami Gange that has a component of plantation in Eco Park and compensatory forestry. A detailed plan is already underway.

The decision comes after a recent meeting at Nabanna last week in which the chief minister expressed her desire to develop New Town as a Green City. Accordingly, the Hidco authorities had a long discussion with M/s Lintas, the creative partner of Hidco about ways in which to engage citizens in the greening movement. A strategy will be chalked up soon that will have the plan for making New Town a Green City.
