HYDERABAD: As 18 major road junctions will get complete makeover as part of the Strategic Road Development Plan (SRDP), the Hyderabad district administration has begun the exercise to acquire land from government entities and private property owners. The district administration hopes to complete acquisition of properties, including 3,177.90 square yards of the walkway of the KBR Park near Maharaja Agrasen Junction, in the next few months.

The government, as part of the SRDP, has proposed to build skyways, flyovers/grade separators and widen roads on major corridors at various locations in the city and asked the Hyderabad district administration to acquire and handover land to begin work.

The GHMC has identified 18 junctions and entrusted to the land acquisition wing the task of acquiring land to facilitate SRDP. The 18 junctions would be taken up in five packages. For instance near KBR Park, GHMC engineering wing officials have identified six junctions for improvement at KBR Park entrance, Cancer Hospital, Maharaja Agrasen statue, Film Nagar and Jubilee Hills Checkpost.

"At these five junctions, land has been acquired already. However, work may not been taken up now as the National Green Tribunal (NGT) has stayed all work around the KBR Park. We have acquired 3,177.90 square yards, pertaining to the Hyderabad Metropolitan Development Authority (HMDA) at Maharaja Agrasen Junction. Though KBR Park is a national park, its walkways are being maintained by the HMDA," special deputy collector, land acquisition, GHMC, P Chandraiah told STOI.

Land acquisition for junctions at LB Nagar, Bairamulguda, Kaminineni Hospital, Chintalkunta, Uppal, Biodiversity Park, Mind Space, Ayyappa Society, Rajeev Chowk, Owaisi Hospital and Bahdupura are underway. Rasoolpura and Uppal junctions have been dropped from the SRDP as land at these two locations has to be acquired from defence and central government organisations.

"So far, we have received proposals to acquire land at two major junctions -- KBR Park and Bahadupura -- from the GHMC engineering wing," he said.

"At most junctions, properties may not get affected when pillars of skyways and flyovers are constructed. Even if some properties are affected, the government will pay compensation to the affected parties as per market value," the land acquisition official said. Though we have no exact details on the extent of land needed at the junctions for the SRDP, it could be between 20 and 30 acres," the official replied.

When contacted, Hyderabad collector Rahul Bojja told STOI: "The process of land acquisition, pertaining to proposed junctions by the GHMC under SRDP, is under process and probably will be completed in a month or so. A notification will be released after identifying the properties likely to be affected due to the SRDP along with the extent of land to be acquired before the land is taken over."
