Goa: Transport poor, no night shift for women
Panaji: The Goa government has informed the Centre that it was not in favour of women working in industries between 10pm and 6am because of inadequate public transport, while saying it was open to the second shift which is 6pm to midnight. Women are allowed to work late hours only in resorts and hospitals.
Goa's minister for factories and boilers Pandurang (Deepak) Dhavalikar said, "We have informed the union ministry of labour that we don't have the facilities.
We have no objection to the second shift. Let's see what they decide."
Chief minister Laxmikant Parsekar had a meeting with the investment promotion board (IPB) in June last year, and indicated his openness to permit women to work at night in industries following a representation from the pharma sector.
The rationale behind the move was to ensure that pharmaceutical companies hired Goan women rather than men from other states.
The investment promotion board had said that industries would have to ensure women's security.
