THANE: The Thane revenue department cleared 183 encroachments from the land allotted to people affected by the Koyna dam project.

The structures, including godowns and residential units, were razed in the day-long drive on Wednesday following complaints from residents in the area.

Around 90 chawls had come up on a four-acre land in Thakurpada area of Pimpri village that was reserved for developing amenities for project affected persons (PAPs).

Around 100 families displaced by the Koyna dam project in Western Maharashtra were allocated the land along the Taloja Shil road. However, a few small-time real estate developers from Mumbra and nearby areas started usurping some open land stretches.

A posse of 50 policemen, six JCBs and trucks were deployed for the job which started demolishing the structures by morning and managed to clear the area.

Meanwhile, a few metres away, a colossal six-acre land belonging to the revenue department was also cleared after it was encroached upon by traders who constructed godowns without securing any permissions.

“The illegal structures came up on the land allotted to PAPs from Koyna. Buildings were constructed on the open land and it had to be cleared. The demolition drive started on Wednesday morning after complaints and the land stretches were cleared. They will now be handed over to the settlers,” said a district official.
