Listen Up – How Music Can Improve Customer Experience

Sarah Stowe

Whether you serve food, sell apparel, answer phones or fix cars, creating a positive customer experience should be at the top of your priority list.

There are many ways you can improve on your customer experience, without having to overhaul your current processes, methods and brand.

One of these is through music.

Though strategically underused in a business environment, music is responsible for many things.

You, busting out those dance moves at last year’s Christmas party are one. Boosting sales, motivating staff and reinforcing your brand, are others.

The right music creates a better atmosphere for your customers, it puts them in a good mood, and if shopping in store; can encourage customers to browse for longer, have more patience when required to wait, and increase the likelihood of them returning.

In an academic study, it was found that playing classical music in a restaurant makes people buy more than pop music or no music at all, but it also makes customers think that it is expensive- which when used in the wrong setting, can put people off.

In call centre environments, or when placing customers on hold, music is incredibly important. It makes your caller stay on the line and masks long wait times. In fact, according to a recent UK survey, a massive 81 per cent of consumers moods are swayed by the type of music they are asked to listen to whilst waiting on hold.

The primary function of music should be to keep callers, and in-store customers engaged and interested- even if only passively so. When choosing music, you should consider the following:

– Branding

Music, when matched to the right brand, can create a positive brand sentiment, reinforce your corporate message, and help you to connect with customers on an emotional level.

– Customer demographic

If you have ever walked into a store and thought “this music is way too loud”, then picked up a pair of tiny denim shorts and cringed, you are probably shopping in the wrong store. Brand and demographics go hand in hand, you should therefore spend time getting to know your audience if you want to engage them.

– Reaction

How do you want customers to react when hearing your music? E.g; do you want customers to slow down, speed up, sit down, dance? Remember, music is power.

– Am I breaking any laws?

Australia has very strict regulations when it comes to publically broadcasting music. Unknowingly, many businesses are actually breaking the law. Know your rights.
