The present edition of the Indian Premier League has been plagued by injuries to key players forcing a lot of reshuffling. Newest addition to the ‘sick bay’ is Rising Pune Supergiants’ Steve Smith who returned home after a wrist injury. Though, the injury wasn’t that serious but Smith won’t be a part of IPL 2016 anymore. Here’s a list of cricketers who have flown back home after getting injured.
Lasith Malinga
Sri Lankan quickie Lasith Malinga who plays for Mumbai Indians in the IPL was sent back home after sustaining a knee injury. Malinga hasn’t been part of the Lankan team for quite a while as the right-handed bowler hasn’t played an official match since the opener at the Asia Cup – thus missing out on the remainder of the Asia Cup and the World T20. Jerome Taylor joined MI in place of Malinga.
Lendl Simmons
Another Mumbai Indians player Lendl Simmons was ruled out of the Twenty20 tournament after the West Indian suffered an injury in the lower back. Simmons was included in the West Indies squad that went on to clinch the World T20 title earlier this year. The swashbuckling striker dispatched the Indian bowling in the semi-final match to hand over West Indies, a berth in the final. He was replaced by Martin Guptill.
Faf du Plessis
Rising Pune Supergiants were blown away after Faf du Plessis was sent back home. The South African batsman fractured his finger during the match against Sunrisers Hyderabad. Usman Khawaja replaced du Plessis.
Kevin Pietersen
Kevin Pietersen too joined this list when he returned home after injuring his right calf in the match against Royal Challengers Bangalore. Pietersen had come out to bat at No. 3 in the second over against Royal Challengers, and faced only one ball before he retired hurt and had to be carried off the field.
Rising Pune Supergiants’ misery escalated when the Australian all-rounder Mitchell Marsh was also ruled out of the tournament with a side strain. “Mitchell experienced some pain over his left abdominal area while batting at a training session with his team Pune in the IPL a few days ago,” Cricket Australia sports science and sports medicine manager Alex Kountouris had said.
John Hastings
The Australia and Kolkata Knight Riders allrounder John Hastings, was ruled out of the IPL after he picked up an ankle injury. Hastings hurt himself during the warm-ups before Knight Riders’ match against Mumbai Indians.
