VADODARA: The row over the housing scheme coming up in Sama escalated on Wednesday as anonymous advertisements dubbing protesters as "extortionists" sprung up in the city.

The Congress that is spearheading the protests threatened to intensify the agitation after the advertisements surfaced.

The housing scheme is being on a public private partnership (PPP) mode under the Mukhyamantri Gruh Yojana at Sanjaynagar on the Mangal Pandey Road. The developer is to construct 800 units for the people whose houses were razed earlier. In the remaining portion, the developer is looking to come up with a residential and a commercial project.

The advertisements tried to build a case for the project. It was also clarified that no temple had existed at the site and that the wall was made to prevent flooding of the area which was an old problem. The Congress has alleged that temples were demolished near the project site.

The Congress has been raising several issues regarding the scheme and has alleged that the riverbed of Vishwamitri has been reclaimed for the project which may result in floods in the city. It has also claimed that a retaining wall to protect the site has been built outside the land given to the developer for the project.

The Congress sees this as an attack on it. Congress member Shailesh Amin said, "It is evident who is being targeted. Who else is conducting an agitation over the project?"

City Congress president Prashant Patel on Wednesday demanded that a probe into the project should be conducted by a retired magistrate and officials.
