BENGALURU: Recognising that workplaces of the future will be employee-led and will drive culture as a top-down activity, HCL Technologies has put in place ‘Inspire’ - an advocacy programme which employs a multi-level engagement approach to drive employee awareness and adoption of various internal platforms.

At the Noida-headquartered IT services company, employees generate ideas that are customer-centric and are linked to the business strategy, which in turn add value for customers. ‘Inspire’ will directly work with the people managers community who are accountable for engaging their teams, thereby creating a grassroots movement with higher and faster reach.

“Our management model centres around the idea of ‘employees first and customers second’. It is therefore imperative that employees have a good understanding of the tenets as well as the behaviours that make them successful ‘ideapreneurs’- including seeding, nurturing, and harvesting of ideas,” said Prithvi Shergill, chief human resource officer. “It is in this context that the Inspire programme has been rolled out, in order to invert the pyramid and transition ownership of the culture of ideapreneurship.”

In the first phase, begun in February, 200 self-nominated people managers are being directly trained by ideapreneurship culture ambassadors. These 200 employees will further coach a minimum of 5 team members/ peers each, thereby building a chain of advocates that would support the institutionalization of HCL’s culture and beliefs.

“This will help HCL’s managers and people understand our grassroots innovation culture by clearly articulating the role they play in ideation and value creation,” said Shergill.

The company’s people managers will be responsible for increasing awareness within their teams and adopting HCL’s internal platforms.

“A multi-level advocacy approach has been adopted to facilitate the objective of this programme, given the scale of our workforce and the geographic spread. This approach has enabled us to ensure we tailor our messages by segment and treat the workforce not as a group of 100k+ people but as a ‘workforce of one’, each with their unique drivers of passion, proficiencies and potential,” said Shergill.

‘Inspire’ is expected to not only support people managers to inculcate a culture of ideation in their day-to-day work, thereby enhancing collective performance in delivering innovation, but is also expected to be an opportunity to amplify their personal and professional growth.
