Talks with North Chennai residents to acquire land for metro rail
Efforts are on to takeover land for construction of four stations- Theagaraya College, Korukkupet, Tondiarpet and Tolgate and rail routes connecting Korukkupet to Tondiarpet and Tondiarpet to Tolgate in the extension phase
CHENNAI: In a meeting organised by Chennai metro rail officials at their office in Koyembedu on Tuesday, more than 62 North Chennai residents voiced their grievances and submitted petitions related to acquisition of land and other properties for construction of the metro rail phase-I extension from Washermenpet to Wimco Nagar.
Efforts are on to takeover land for construction of four stations- Theagaraya College, Korukkupet, Tondiarpet and Tolgate and rail routes connecting Korukkupet to Tondiarpet and Tondiarpet to Tolgate in the extension phase.
The residents, who submitted petitions, belonged to areas where Tondiarpet and Tolgate metro stations and Korukkupet to Tondiarpet route.
Officials from metro rail and the Chennai Collectorate briefed the residents on the provisions available in the Land Acquisition Act. They assured that according to the Act, land owners will be given a compensation double the market price.
Owners of buildings will be compensated upon evaluation by public works department officials while compensation will also be given to people who will lose their livelihood due to the acquisition of land. Officials had conducted similar meetings earlier at the metro rail office and at the Chennai Collectorate.
The nine-kilometer extension line will have eight stations including two underground stations at Sir Theagaraya College and at Korukkupet. Tenders have already been floated for the construction of the two underground stations and 2.5km tunnels.
