KOLKATA: Reliance Jio Infocomm has teamed up with eight global carriers, including British Telecom and Deutsche Telekom, to put in place a knowledge-sharing alliance to home in on new and popular telecom innovations and services and bring them to India.

Mukesh Ambani-owned Reliance Jio Infocomm, which is slated to commercially launch 4G services in April, has built India’s largest greenfield 4G network, installing 90,000 eco-friendly cell towers and 2.5 lakh route km of fiber optic cables.

“Jio is set to enable each Indian to live a digital life and we invite the best partners to work with us to co-create a Digital India,” Rainer Deutschmann, chief product & innovation officer, said in a statement on Monday. Jio’s other partners are Millicom, MTS, Orange, Rogers, TeliaSonera and TIM.

Brokerage CLSA recently said Reliance Jio is equipped to offer the “best 4G coverage” by virtue of its pan-India footprint, unlike incumbents Bharti Airtel, Idea and Vodafone, which have 4G presence in 15, 12 and five circles, respectively. Airtel, the No. 1 telco, has rolled out 4G in more than 350 towns and cities. Vodafone India and Idea are launching their 4G high-speed broadband services in select markets.

“I’m happy we were able to build this powerful alliance as partnering becomes more and more important. As operators, we can provide partners with the best networks and easy distribution to customers,” said Christian von Reventlow, chief product & innovation officer at Deutsche Telekom.

He said the global alliance would enable each member-carrier to provide “customers with the best and most innovative products and services.”

Vasyl Latsanych, ?MO of MTS Group, said the synergies that the alliance brings “would help create additional value for our customers and give us a chance to provide latest innovations, best services, products and client experience.”

The alliance will focus on exchanging best practices on how to bring partner propositions to the market and on joint efforts at partner scouting. It will also exchange knowledge about upcoming trends and services amongst the group.

At present, the nine-member alliance has established relationships with 30 innovative partner businesses, including AirBnB, Celltick, Disconnect, Idoomoo, Magisto, Mojio and Spotify.

The alliance is an open network of operators worldwide with complementary geographical footprints. It covers all relevant product categories within an operator’s business, mobile as well as fixed, B2C as well as B2B.
